Call for Papers CIECI 2023 “Evolving Global Value Chain Participation into Digital Transformation and Sustainable Development"

Digital transformation, encompassing the integration of digital technologies across all sectors, and sustainable development, which encompasses economic growth, social well-being, and environmental protection, are both their critical motivations and goals. Consequently, several key issues require resolution, including the suitability of conventional labor-intensive, manufacturing-export-oriented development strategies within GVCs and the necessary actions to foster GVC cooperation in promoting digital transformation and sustainable development.

To create and develop an academic environment, sharing experiences, new ideas, and scientific research results on international economic integration and GVCs to promote digital transformation and sustainable development, the University of Economics and Business, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-UEB), in collaboration with Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Vietnam (FNF), Sofia University (Bulgaria), University of Adelaide (Australia), Rangsit University (Thailand), Université Catholique de Louvain - Saint-Louis – Bruxelles (Belgium), University of Salento (Lecce, Italy), National Chengchi University (Taiwan, China), University of Economics and Law (Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam, and Foreign Trade University organize a conference entitled “Evolving Global Value Chain Participation into Digital Transformation and Sustainable Development on November 24th, 2023, in Hanoi. The Conference is the 11th in the series of annual Conferences on International Economic Cooperation and Integration (CIECI), initiated in 2013 by the VNU-UEB. The Conference focused on discussing the following topics:

  • The theoretical basis for GVC participation and reasoning on how GVC participation can enhance digital transformation and sustainable development.
  • Global context and factors affecting GVC participation towards digital transformation and sustainable development.
  • Participation in GVCs at all levels, from business, industry, to national level, associated with digital transformation and sustainable development.
  • Policy recommendations on promoting GVC participation at the national, industry, and enterprise levels towards digital transformation and sustainable development.

Conference papers:

We welcome experts, researchers, scholars, and practitioners to contribute papers for the Conference on (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • The theoretical basis for GVC participation and reasoning on how participation can enhance digital transformation and sustainable development:
    • The theoretical basis, research methods, and databases of GVCs and GVCs participation and upgrading at the national, sectoral, and firm levels.
    • The theoretical basis for the relationship between participation in GVCs, sustainable development, and digital
  • Global context and factors affecting participation in GVCs of Vietnam and developing countries in the world towards digital transformation and sustainable development:
    • Global economic contexts affect the participation in GVCs, e.g., political tensions between countries, digital transformation, energy crisis, COVID-19 pandemic.
    • Domestic factors affecting participation in GVCs, e.g., institutional environment, level of economic development, industrial structure, trade, and investment policies.
    • Future trends of GVCs and factors that shape and promote/limit participation in GVCs in the future.
  • Participation in GVCs of Vietnam and developing countries in the world at the national, industrial, and firm levels towards digital transformation and sustainable development:
    • Position, level, and stakeholders in GVCs; stages and added value in GVC participation.
    • Business-level GVC participation into GVCs in the context of digital transformation and sustainable development.
    • Industry-level GVC participation to leverage digital transformation and sustainable development.
    • National strategies for GVC participation to advance digital transformation and sustainable development.
    • Differences in the process of participating in GVCs between countries, economic sectors, and firms.
    • Policies and measures to enhance the involvement in GVCs.
    • Lessons learned, achievements and limitations, opportunities, challenges, and barriers to participation in GVCs.
  • Policy recommendations to promote participation in GVC towards digital transformation and sustainable development:
    • Policy recommendations to enable and upgrade GVC participation at the national, industry, and firm levels.
    • Orientations, strategies, and policies to encourage GVC participation in digital transformation and sustainable development.
  • Other topics related to the international production network, green economy, circular economy, innovation economy, the resilience of GVCs, the relationship between international economic integration and GVC participation, digital trade concerning GVCs, , will be considered.
